Thursday, Paul Hudson, a young man

ftboat 28 years of age, who described him,bbU as a cook, was brought up under I wrest; before Major Take, R.M., and t charged with larceny of £2. It appears

from (he evidence that Constable Salmon,

ftfttioned at Manaia, was gathering agricultural^ returns in the west end of the

Hawera county, and stayed at Opunake the previous night, putting up at the Opanake -'Hotel. He slept in tha same room as the prisoner, and noticed tbe prisoner looking at his (tbe constable's) watch about „ daybreak. The watch and his trousers were lying on a chair outßide his bed. He had £2 in his trousers' pooket. Himßelf and prisoner got np at the same time and had breakfast together. When he vent to pay the landford he found his money gone. He searohed the room, and then accused prisoner of taking the money. - The prisoner denied all knowledge of the money, and seemed highly indignant at being accused of such a thing. Constable Twomey was then sent for, and the miss* ing money turned np in the lining of the prisoner's coat. In answer to the Bencb, the prisoner said be found the money on the floor, and, as he was very hard up. he was tempted to take the money, as he thought the constable was a man who had "plenty of money, but had no idea who he was. He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, with hard labor, in New Plymouth gaol.— Taranaki Herald.
