A Dr. Hanratty, of Masterton, has been sentenced to two months' imprisonment at Pahiatna for drunkenness. The Eev. Thoß. H. Tbe city of Wellington is the largest constituency in the colony, and the only one selfcontained within city boundaries. Canterbury loses the member which Wellington gains. A telegram from Waverley states Thoa. Wioks waß killed yesterday by the fall of a tree in the Momohaki block. The entertainment at Okaiawa last night passed successfully, we hear. No doubt a fuller report will reach us soon. On the charge against Thomas and his wife, at Hakaru, Auokland, for alleged ill-treatment of their child, Thomas has been committed for trial, and will be charged with manslaughter ; his wife was discharged. , The Taranaki Herald says that Mr. J. G. George has received a telegram from Mr. Sawers, who i 8 now in Wei- j lington, to the effeot that be has interviewed the Railway Commissioners, and that there is every likelihood of a minimum of 40 tons of butter for special night train being granted. A consequence of tbe short rainfall on the Taieri plain, Otago, is that peaty ground is in many places burning rapidly, and threatening to destroy crops and pastures. At more than one point the settlers have had hard work to "prevent serious damage being done. The peat in places is deep, and fire has been smouldering in it for a long time. In reference to tbe agitation for the co struction of a railway to connect Auckland and Taranaki, tbe following communication has been received by E. Mitchelson from tbe Minister of Public Works in reply to his telegram asking for information as to tbe cost of tbe various lines suggested for the Main Trunk Railway and other particulars :—": — " In reply, re North Island main trunk line of railway, tbe latest ascertained information is as follows : — Estimated cost to complete tbe central route, £1,673.000 , estimated cost of Ngaire route, £1,166,000; estimated cost to complete the railway at the Auckland end to the point of of divergence, £154,000 ; amount already expended, about £244,000; distance from Wellington to Auckland by the central route, 433 miles; distance by Ngaire route, 480 miles."
