KAPONGA. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

A meeting of the Kaponga School Committee was held in the schoolbouse on Saturday evening. Present— Messrs. E. J. Ellerm (chairman), Bates, Mackie, Frethey, and J. H. Frethey.

A report from the teaoher stated that the number on the roll at tbe end of last quarter was 42, the average number on the roll 32, and the average attendance 247. The percentage of attendances to average number on the roll is thus only 75 per cent., which is not at all satisfactory, but it was explained that the very bad state of some of the roads prevented many of the. children from attending so regularly as they might do, although the teacher drew the committee's attention to the fact that several of the ohildren who were living quite close to tbe eobool did not attend very regularly, the attendance having fallen below the half number of possible attendances. It was resolved, That the chairman see the parents of the children complained of in the report and ack them to send them more regularly.

It was resolved to ask the board to supply tbe school with certain requisites. The Chairman moved, That the board be asked to build a teaober's residence. He thought that the board should be satisfied that the school was now well established from tbe fact the number on the roll had increased from 25 in the first quarter to 42 in the seoond, and would still increase in the summer months. The teaoher bad two miles to go to the school at present.— Resolution carried.

Mr. Swadling attended the meeting, and asked what action tbe committee intended taking in respect to erecting the division fence between bis property and tbe school ground. He made an offer to erect two fences providing the committee found half the wire, one on tbe correct line and the other some distance on the school ground, so as to plant with ornamental trees, but it was shown that by doing this, the water at the baok would be cut off, and the committee declined. After some discussion, it was decided to ereot the fence on tbe correct line. The tree* planting was allowed to stand over until next season.

I regret to say that Mr. E. B. Bates has, owing to ill-health, been compelled to let bis bush farm, and, I believe, intends living at Normanby. Mr. Bates has had all tbe hardships of making a home in the bush, and, now that he has made for himself a comfortable home, he finds that he is not equal to the work required on a buah place. Mr. Bates' many friends will wish him a speedy recovery to his usual health and strength; and that he will soon be among us again.

Tbe contractors tor felling the balance of tbe township have completed their work, which has added considerably to the appearance of the place.

The Wesleyans are to be congratulated on getting an organ for the chapel, which was muoh needed. A subscription list was started, and in a very short time the amount required was promised. Tbe instrument has been ordered) and is expected up next week ; cost £20.
