Sudden Death of Mr. C. S. Parnel

REPORTED SUICIDE.

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.'

LONDON, October 7.

Obituary — C. S. Parnell, aged 45. He caught a chill while in bed on Friday, and developed acute rheumatism. He was unconscious for several hours, and died at midnight yesterday in intense agony. He was staying at Brighton.

Later.

Mrs. Parnell's solicitors have received unsigned telegrams stating that Parnell committed suicide.

Mr. Charles S. Parnell's untimely death will be deplored by many of those who differed most strongly from him in politics. He was undoubtedly one of the " strong* est " men ot the day. He was of late able to retain some political power even in the face of disclosures, social and moral disabilities, which would have at once closed the career of moßt publio men. With tbe vast power of the Catholic priesthood arrayed against him, and with many of his former friends enrolled amongst his most active political foes, Mr. Pnrnell was etill an active political power in the land. While many of his aims may have been mistaken and many of his methods desperate, the sincerity of his patriotism to Ireland, hia undaunted courage and unswerving and unshaken devotion to bis cause certainly commanded the admiration of all sorts and conditions of man. People of all shades of political opinion often asked themselves whether the supreme aqdacHy and boundless selfconfidence of this " Uncrowned King of Ireland " might not in the end briDg success to the cause of which he was co able and so untiring an advocate, As a politician Mr Parnell was but young. He first entered Parliament in 1875, and first made a name in 1877. In 1878 he was eleoted leader of the Irish Party in the Honee of Commons.
