LONDON, October 6.
A hundred and twenty-five workmen of the Imperial Institute buildings have struck against the employment of unionists.
The seriousness of Mr. W. H. Smith's condition was suppressed by tbe wish of tbe Government. His death was the result of overwork. Intense regret is expressed by botb parties.
The ship Wolviston, from Bristol to New York, was sunk by an iceberg, and 12 of those on board wore drowned. The barque Minnsklin was wrecked off the coast of Newfoundland, and 23 were drowned.
The insinuation of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale's connection with the Gaiety chorus girl is generally disbelieved. LONDON, October 7. Obituary — Sir J. Pope Hennessy, M.P. for Kilkenny North.
Dr. Moorhourse, preaching at the Church Congress, at Rhye, declared that a proposal to disendow the Church of England and Wales, meant the piecemeal disendowment of the Church of England. He asserted that the voluntary system in Australia was unable to prevent growing neglect, though the working man there was comparatively rich.
The death of Mr. Smith was due to a chill caught while yachting. Acute gout followed, and this succeeded in reaching his heart. Mr. Gladstone sent a telegram of condolence, and recognising the fine qualities of the deceased gentleman, and his devotion to public service. All the English newspapers make generous references to the deceased, and the Times states that no man will be more diffioult to replace.
BERLIN, October 7.
The New Guinea Company announce that tbe Eaiser Wilhelm plantation is badly situated, and advises its members to exchange shares into the Astrolabe Company, which is being formed in Berlin for the purpose ot growing tobacco on its land in New Guinea.
The King of Wurtemburg died of hear disease. He will be buried on Friday.
VIENNA, October 6.
Alarming reports are persistently published in Vienna respecting the concentration of Russian troops in Bessarabia and along the entire western frontier.
SYDNEY, October 5.
Rabbits and hares are increasing to an alarming extent in the country districts, though, owing to the good season, the damage is not noticeab.e. Ravages in the Cobar seotion have driven tbe stock off the runs.
VALPARAISO, October 6.
Humours are afloat that Balmaceda is not dead, but concealed in the American Legation.
BRISBANE, October 7.
Shaw's hardware establishment was burned out to-day. The damage is estimated at £35,000. The stock was insured for £37,000. The New Zealand and the Standard of£c6 had £500 each, and the South British £1000. Six firemen were buried by falling walls, and three of them were badly injured, a Reventh also is misßiog and it is feared be has perished in the ruins.
It is beUeved the Bank of England will resign its Queensland business unless Sir T. Mcll wraith apologises for bis recent speech accusing the bank of sticking to tbe colony when it paid them to do so and throwing ie aside when it did not.
