Mr. Gladstone said the Government were responsible for the introduction of the foul and odious inequality and enforcement of law in Ireland, for which there was no precedent, and he asserted that the appeal courts had been cruelly and wantonly used against those in custody. The motion was lost. PARIS, April 24. The Government intend to ask the Chamber of Deputies to vote a sum of fifty-two million francs in aid of the defences of Brest, Cherbourg, Toulon, and Cambray. M. de Freycinet has stated that it is the intention of France to have a million of men stationed on the frontier, aud another million in the interior, and also that it is proposed to extend the term under which the men will serve to 25 j'ears.
