About one-third of the cargo of the wrecked ship Pleione has already been landed. It has sustained no damage. Mr. W. T. L. Travers has resigned the presidency of the Wellington Law Society, and Mr. H. D. Bell has been elected to the position, and Mr. W. H. Quick vicepresident. WELLINGTON, April 11. Iv the Supreme Court, Charles Hamilton, who pleaded guilty to forgery, was sentenced to three years ; John Astley, alias Carliug, convicted of larceny, two years; George Patterson, robbery with violence at Masterton, three years. The number of bankrupts in Wellington during the month of March was 10. AUCKLAND, April 11. Sir George Grey has presented to the Ary Gallery several additional paintings, a large number of books, valuable vases, and curios, native flax mats, carved woodwork, etc. A child named Thomas E. Norman, aged 13 months, fell into a saucepan of boiling water, near Helensville, on Saturday, and died in a short time. The exodus from New Zealand continues and by the Waihora, which left for Sydney this evening, over 40 persons, married men with families, left to try their luck on Australian shores. CHRISTCHURCH, April 10. A young man named W. Catdwell, ironmonger, was drowned at Avon this morniDg. He had been ailing for some time, aud was missed early when his brother went in search, and found the body in five feet of water. His coat was in a boat moored close by. CHRISTCHURCH, April 11. At Amberley to-day Arthur Ryan, a jockey, was thrown while exercising a horse over the hurdles, and sustained concussion of the brain. There are very slight hopes of his recovery. WESTPORT, April 11. A swagger was drowned in the river to-day. No particulars are to hand.
