AUCKLAND, October 19.
A man named Patrick 6'Meagher, felling, yesterday, at Tawranga Creek, when the axe he was using slipped and cue bis head. He was afterwards found unconscious and died this morning. Professor Thomas examined a small quantity of stuff brought from Waitoa, and j unhesitatingly declared specks of gold, which were found on washing, to be filings. It is said thnt the stuff examined by Prof. Thomaß was a portion taken from Waitoa by Mr. Duredard, and which is to be forwarded to Christchurch; but Mr. Duredard states that the dirt was brought by him from tbe field, and has remained under his care intact since he brought it away, and that none of it has been taken to be tested. CHRISTCHURCH. October 19. The Diocesan Synod was opened yesterday by Bishop Harper who announced his intention to resign at the end of next year as his health will not permit his discharging all the duties of his office. DUNEDIN, October 19. The City Council, in order to protect theatre goers, are about to request the Inspector of Police to instruct the con* stables on duty to inspect the places of togress and egress at all performances at kails, theatres, etc.
