THE WEST COAST SETTLEMENT RESERVES BILL AND HOW IT WAS COOKED.
To the Editor of the Star.
Sir,— When Mr. McGuire ' firat propounded his scheme for the relief of tenants by the readjustment of rents, your paper, with others, scouted the idea at being altogether impracticable and nnfair. Iv the face of much opposition, Mr. McGuire, however, stuck, to his text, and now opinion respecting its adaptability has changed, in proof ot which we hare the House of Representatives passing a bill in the direction indioated by Mr. McGuire last year. Major Atkinson openly spoke and voted for the bill in the House, and I should have had some faith in his sincerity had he used hit influence with his friends Pollen, Richmond, Miller. McLean, Mantell, and others, who are bis closest allies, but who, we find, threw ont the bill in the Upper House. It is evident that a deep scheme is being played oat at the expense of we leaseholders. Had the Major been really in earnest he might have ensured its passage through, r The Government, as ably represented joy Mr. Buckley, strove manfully for oar relief, but the Major's friends upset the bill, in order no doubt to agree with the laid campaigner's electioneering tactics. Too soft, Major ! Clap trap of this kind won't go down. We are becoming educated to your system. Your friend soapey Pan Pollen and relative Richmond, with the others who are ever at your party's beck and call in tbe Upper House would 'undoubtedly have carried the bill through' had you wished it. But no, that would not suit your ticket. So, with relief just within oar reach, you have permitted all our cherished expeotatious to be dashed to pieces. — I am, &0., Lraseholdkb.
