ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
(Per Mariposa, at Auckland.) AMERICAN SUMMARY. SAN FRANCISCO, April 6. Mr. W. F. Lawry, of the New Zealand Agency in San Francisco, is moving energetically in attracting the attention of the people of that place toward the Melbourne Exhibition, to be held the latter pprt of next year, aud also to the Adelaide Exposition in June next. The national debt of the United States has decreased over 13,000,000 dollars (£2,600,000) during the month of April lash. The race for the American Cup will be sailed on September 27th and 29 Lh. Persistent attempts have been made recently todestroy the New York Zeitung office by incendiarism. Messrs. Carruthers and Co., the leading grain firm of New York, Chicago, St Louis, and other Western cities, failed on May 6. Mr. Oliver Hoyle, the millionaire leather merchant of New Yoi k, died on May 5, at Stamford, Connecticut, from the effects of a fall. President Cleveland has announced his purpose to decline nomination for thu second term of office. It is reported that Dr. MeGlynn, of New York, will be suspended from his pastoral functions. Prince Frederick Leopold of Prussia and suite anivcrl at Sau Fnincisco from Chiua on April 21. Ho is making ;i turnaround the world. A heavy gold trick swindle was perpetrated iv New York on April 22ud. A well-known wealthy geii'leman of the city deposited in the United Slates Assay Office four lnrge bars, supposed to be of gold, to be refined and made into standard gold bars. They were valued at 10,000 to 40,0U0dols. When the assayer chipped them the bars were found to be of copper, with a thin wash of gold, and worth ab-jut 4dols. Bishop Lyncli, of Toronto, telegraphed to William O'Brien, on April 21st, to abandon hjs visit he proposed to make to Canada. Nova Scotia hsu voted to secede from the Dominion of Canada. A woman named Sarah House and a Boston banker fled from that place after swindling the depositors out of some £50,000, and was discovered iv St. Johu's N. 8., on April 19ih. Becoming alarmed, she cmtiuued her flight to the interior of the Dominion of Canada. Sir. Johu McDonald stated in the Canadian Parliament on May sth that the Canadian Government would contribute an annual subaity of £75,000 in aid of the Pacific Steamship Servipe, on conditioi that the Imperial Government
would grant 300,000 dollars annnally. The service proposed was tri-monthly between Vancouver, 8.C., and Hongkong. A parcel post is to be established between the United States and Canada.
