The Star. (PUBLISHED DAILY.) FRIDAY, JULY 9, 1886. POTATO COMPETITION.
In another column will be found tbe particulars of the special potato competition to be held in next March under the auspices of the Normanby Horticultural Society. The society acted wisely, we think, in acceptiug Mr. Smith's offer, because this competition will afford a conclusive test as to the suitability of this soil and climate for tbe varieties to be shown. Subscribers to the competition get excellent value for their 10s, in tbe shape of 80lbs of seed potatoes, of five different sorts, including free exhibition, and tbe chance of winning either a £2, £S, or £5 prize. The action of the society in procuring
fresh seed of the Circular Head potato, admittedly the most marketadle variety at present in this district, is also to be warmly commended. It is clear that the management of the society is in exceptionally good hands. We commend to the careful attention of everyone, the prospectus in to-day's issue, the competition to be open to all, whether members of the society, or not.
