WELLINGTON, July 9. Nearly two hundred essays on " Thrift" have been received by tbe National Mutual Life Association for their prize of 250 guineas. Major Atkinson has agreed to judge the essays and make an award. He expects it to occupy him a month.
A young women named Mary Brougham, housekeeper at the Grey town Hotel, comcommitted suicide, by hanging, last night. CHRISTCHUKCH, July 9.
A private letter from Gisborne states that 100 feet of oil is showing in the pibe of tbe South Pacific petroleum weils, and that the hole has bad to be plugged. Weaver, the .borer, is believed to be awaiting ingfci notions from the Sydney directors before removing the pJng. The opinion is that it will be proved oil bas been struck.
Rollett's flour-mill at Hororata was burned down last night. Insured in the South British for £2000— mostly reinsured. The cause is unknown.
The Mayor having called a meeting to consider the question of relief for the distress by the Tarawera eruption, only one person was present, viz., the Dean of Cbristcb urcb.. It appears to bo the general impression that loose cash is scarce here just now, and that there have been a good many calls upon the pi— ses of the charitable.
DUNEDIN, July 8. The Mayor has telegraphed to the Government that there are 800 men on tbe verge of starvation in Dunedin.
. GISBORNE, Julg 8. There has been considerable speculation in oil shares since it came to light that the bore of the South Pacific petroleum works had to be plugged. -
AUCKLAND, Julys. The Tongariro took 3856 pieces of beef and 907 carcases of frozen mutton. The Arawa took 3000 carcases of frozen mutton and a shipment of tinned Kaipara mullet.

AUCKLAND, Jnly 9. At the Supreme Court, Herry Graham, for breaking and entering a jeweller's shop, was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment. John Connepafe, for robbery from Porter and Co.'s, received 7 years. Fred. Fronic, for the same robbery, got five years.
At tbe City Council it was stated that a cow suffering from cancer was recently slaughtered and sent to a shop and sold for human food. The matter is being investigated.
A tbree-year-old son of Henry Taylor, cabinetmaker, at Stoneyhurst, was burnt to death yesterday. His clothing caught fire duriug tbe temporary absence of bis mother. The child died after several hours of agony.
NAPIER, July 9.
A meeting of sympathisers with Mr. Gladstone was held this evening under the presidency of the Mayor. Resolutions were adopted in favour oF Home Rule, and a eommiitee was appointed to cable a message to Mr. Gladstone. There was no opposition, only sympathisers with Home Rule being invited. Mr. Locke, M.H.R., was present, and moved the chief resolution.
