TAUPO, May 19
During the past week several residents of Taupuaeharuru, 50 miles distant from Ruapehu, have witnessed at intervals volumes of steam issuing from the summit of the mountain, which is at present one mass of snow. The steam seemed to rise from that side of the crater which the natives say has been recognised as extinct from time immemorial.
NEW PLYMOUTH, May 19.
Another fire occurred this morning at 1,30, the property destroyed being Ferndell, at the top of Cameron-street, near the high school. It was a large house, and belonged to the late Mr. Chiltnan (formerly Collector of Customs here). It was unoccupied at the time, the late tenant having left last week. It is insured for .£3OO in the New Zealand office. Incendiarism is suspected.
CHRISTCHURCH, May 19.
During the storm, the premises of Mr. Cowlen, at Governor's Ba.y, were destroyed by one of the creeks coursing down the hillside becoming diverted from its course. The house was crushed to the ground, its inmates, Mr. and Mrs. Cowlin and an invalid daughter, escaping through the broken window. The latter bail to be dragged out in her nightdress.
DUNEDIN, May 19.
The inquest on Mrs. Finch, killed by yesterday's explosion, commenced to-day, but was adjourned until Thursday.
