ROAD BOARD MEETING. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Tbe ordinary monthly meeting was held on Thursday. Present— Messrs. Malone (chairman), Kent, Storer, Taylor, , Thomas, and Walters. WINGROVE ROAD. , Messrs. Holdway and Muir waited on the board to ask that a bridge should be I erected across Ngaire stream to give , access to lands on this road. A settler [ on Oheal road has a private bridge over . the 8 1 ream, which he has kindly allowed \ tbe public to use for several years, bat '. it was alleged that recently one of the petitioners sought to take 15 head of caitle over the bridge, and the owner . refused on tbe ground that there was > not room enough for more than five, , and that as the land was unfenced they t would all be back on his land directly. [ They objected to each interference, and r asked for a public right of way. ; It was pointed ont that there was no I money available, and. that although it I would no doubt be possible to arrange . for an overdraft, there was no security } that the settlers would not immediately , afterwards capitalise their payments. It \ was therefore resolved to ask the settlers r concerned to enter into an agreement I that they would pay to the board (in T event of their capitalising) the one-tbird 5 of their instalments which the board . would otherwise receive. ■) OPUNAKE BOAD. Mr. Tapp had agreed to gravel 30 i chains from Richardson's pit, but tbe * pit bas run out. He offered to procure 1 gravel from the Waingongoro for £4 3s \. per chain, an advance of 24s per chain , upon his original contract. 1 The offer was accepted. v Mr. Richardson asked the board to c protect his claim for tithes on gravel , obtained from his land by a former cont tractor. c The board resolved that they could do - nothing in the matter. The foreman reported that, Mr. Moore, o contractor for gravelling, had gone awaj ■. without properly finishing his work. 0 A letter was read from Moore, pleader ing eickneaa, and asking the board to >. get done wbat little waa required. :, There was considerable difference, [. howover, between wbat Moore said was r deficient and what the foreman required c done. ;. It was therefore resolved to call upon '. the contractor to complete his work at 1 once, and to remind him that be was 0 liable to £1 a day overtime. s Letter read from Surveyor-General. 3 and from Mr. Robinson, about tbe £1000 t grant. ;, It was resolved to get the plans and 1 specifications ready as soon as possible, f and to submit them to the ranger before s inviting tenders. 1 UNPLEASANTNESS. , Mr. Kent had given notice of three ? resolutions, viz. — That no money be paid • to any person without an account being <- passed stating tbe nature of the service > rendered, etc. That tbe clerk write to ? the county council to aßk if any money , bas been paid to any person in connecs tion with the refund of £20 from the Taranaki County Council for tbe Strat-ford-Opunake road. That all correspondence be produced in connection with the grant of £400 for Mountain and Opunake roads. The first motion vraa allowed to lapse, the chairman pointing out tbat no money was ever paid except upon those conditions. The auditors would not otherwise pass tbe accounts. On a seconder being called for, for the second resolution, Mr. Storer said he would second it ; be did not understand it, but would like to bear wbat it meant. Mr. Malone at once resigned the chair. He could stand anything from Mr. Kent, but when a decent respectable member could be found to second such a motion be would not remain. He would not sit in tbe chair and put such an insulting motion. It must be perfectly clear to everyone who knew anything of the subject, that be was accused by implication of having received expenses from tbe board and from the council for the one service. Mr. Kent said do insult waa intended. If tbe other member of the council had been present, be should have sought tbe information from him. Mr. Walters made some strong reflections (Mr. Kent several times calling him to order) upon Mr. Kent's uanal behaviour to those from whom lie differed. Mr. Storer said he had not understood the point when seconding tbe motion. Mr. Thomas said that he also bad not caught the meaning. After a somewhat lengthy discussion, -the clerk, who had taken the chair, put tbe motion, on which Mr. Kent divided the board. Aye, Kent; noes, all the other members. Mr. Malone, at the request of all. tbe dissentients, then resumed tbe chair. Tbe third resolution was withdrawn, tbe clerk reporting tbat many of tbe board's papers had been burned in the Stratford fire. Tbe chairman pointed out that any information conld easily be obtained by the mover from tbe clerk of toe county council. ACCESS WANTED.
