NEWS AND NOTES.

The order paper for Wednesday's sitting of the Manaia Parliamentary Union appears in another column. The opposition, it is said, is oyganisino an attack on khe general proposals of the Government, and intend, on Wednesday evening, to bring down a no-confidence motion. The mover's name has not transpired.

We (Post) understand that further rewards than the one we recently mentioned have been awarded to the police and others who assisted in procuring convictions in the recent illicit still cases at Hawera. Among these, one of J125 was given to the informer, and this sum, we learn, has been paid without the name of the lucky recipient being divulged.

We understand that, owing to the somewhat meagre interest displayed in the proceedings of the Hawera Parliamentary Union during the last few sitting nights, a proposal is on foot to hold half-yearly sessions of two months duration, with four months recess between each. This will, it is thought, keep up a strong interest while the session lasts, and at the end of the recess the members will be able to take up the debates with renewed energy.

The Hawke's Bay Telegraph says.: — On the resignation of Major Scully, Mr. Inspector Bullen, formerly of Christchurch, will be appointed to this district. It is said that when he left Christchurch most of the hotelkeepers ' kept free houses for, an hour in token of their gratification at his departure. A very different mark of esteem will be shown here when' Major Scully takes off the uniform in which he has grown grey, and which he has worn with so much honor to himselt for so many years.

We understand that a well-known and prominent supporter of the Blue Ribbon' cause will, to-morrow, answer a summons at the R.Mi Court, Hawera, on the charge of selling liqnor -within prohibited hours, contrary to the' Licensing Act. It is .scarcely necessary necessa-iy to add that we refer to Mr. F. P. Corkill, Deputy Official Assignee, in which capacity he holds the license for the Empire Hotel, lately the .property of <M. Lloyd. The offence is alleged, to have takeii place since the change of proprietors/ This rather anomalous position is caused by the fact $hat the license has not yet been transferred, and Mr. Corkill still being the holder of it, is~ liable to be sued. Some very interesting complications loom in the distance in connection with this case.

In. Messrs." T, Kennedy Macdonald and Co.'a Landed Property Guide, Opunake is -described as " a township in Taranaki Provincial District, 40 miles trom New Plymouth by coach; situated on the coast. The property here is rapidly increasing in value,- as this is the only port for the Waimate Plains." Such a happy and flattering little pat on the back should ensure for the Land Guide the offer, through its columns; of every section on "sale in that flourishing little township. Hawera- also commands a favorable notice at Mr. Macdonald's hands, and as it is always supposed to' be desirable to see ourselves as others see Ais, we quote his description as follows.; — " A thriving and go-ahead township to tb,e north of Wanganui, inland) on the' Trunk Line of Railway from "Foxton to New Plymouth. It is at present the centre of .considerable •trade, as it 'commands the business of the Waimate _ Plains', for which it •is > the. natural" distributing centre. Population, i6oo> : ;.'«'■; ,

The Oddfellows held their usual fortnightly meeting last evening. There was a fair attendance. Several business items were dealt with. One candidate was initiated. The .trustees reported that the sum of ;6110 had been placed in the bank, ai; fixed deposit.

The annual general meeting of the Hawera Cricket Club will be held at Pulford's Hotel, on Wednesday evening, at eight o'clock sharp, to elect office bearers for the coming season. In consequence of the meeting in respect to the Institute being also called for to-morrow evening, it has been decided to postpone the meeting of member of the Cricket Club till the above hour. It is hoped that the Institute meeting will be held sharp at the hour named, so as to allow cricketers to get away and vote at the election of officers.

Mr. Newton King advertises entries for stock sale at Waiwakaiho on Thursday.

The New Zealand Clothing Factory have a new advertisement announcing continuation of sale.

Tenders are invited for the supply of tunics for Hawera Fire Brigade ; also, for sign writing on the New Zealand Clothing Factory's new premises.

The general public are reminded that this week will positively be the last of E.. A. Adams' monster sale, when special bargains will be made in the following lines, which are left unsold: — Ladies' straw and felt hats under home cost ; ladies' ulsters and jackets at your own prices ; men's, youths', and boys' clothing under cost price ; also, hundreds of other articles, which will be almost griven away. E.. A. Adams makes this a special week of bargains. High-street, Hawera. — Advt.
