HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL

A committee of the Council, consisting of Messrs. Hunter, Yorke, and Godkin, who were appointed to draw up the usual annual estimate of receipts and expenditure during the yoar ending 31st March, met yesterday afternoon, Mr. Hunter in the chair. Accounts were presented showing that since the establishment of the Council there had been expended within each riding the following amounts —Hawera, £1521 ; Waimate, £452 ; and Ngaire, £193. Of this amount, prior to 31st March last, there had been expended in each riding the following amounts (omitting shillings and pence) — Hawera, £979 ; Waimate, £367 ; and Ngaire, £93. It was agreed to treat all expenditure during this financial year as a charge against rates and revenue within the current year, and to add to the latter sums any unexhausted votes to each riding. The account then showed that in Hawera riding there were up to 30th June expenditure and liabilities amounting to £Gl6 — Waimate, £235, of £150 represented liabilities not yet met, and Ngaire £125, of which £100 was properly a charge against the previous year. It was estimated that the total receipts from the several ridings, from all sources, at the rate of which notice had been given, and including' unpaid Crown and native lands rates of last year, would be approximately as follows : — Hawera, £1201 ; Waimate, £1432 ; Ngaire, £110. Schedules of proposed works were received from the engineer of the Hawera Eoad Board, requiring a further expenditure of at least £690. From Waimate Eoad Board engineer that £1000 would be required, exclusive of votes outstanding. No schedule was to band from Ngaire, as that riding looks for assistance from other parts of the county, and was not in a position to prepare a schedule of works without first conferring v/ith other members of the committee. It was agreed to divide the balance of £244, in the bank on the Ist of April, equally between the Hawera and Waimate ridings. An estimate of the ordinary rates outstanding was made, and showed : Hawera, £120 ; Waimate, £IGO ; and Ngaire, £20, in arrears. The total probalile revenue for the year thus assessed amounted to £2743, of which amount there had been already spent or voted about £877 (between £600 and £700 of which is represented by rates on Crown and native lands promised last year, but not paid). The available balance was allocated as follows : Hawera, £620 ; Waimate, £1000; Ngaire, £137. The clerk was instructed to advertise the balance-sheet. It was agreed that a portion of the rates collected in Hawera riding would be needed to keep the Main South road between Hawera and Manaia in repair, and that the balance then available for the Main road between Hawera and Manutahi, on which the traffic will be very heavy for the next two years, would be quite little enough to keep the road in moderately good repair. Any assistance which could bo given to Ngaire riding was likely to be very small. The chairman was requested to communicate with the Treasury in order to ascertain what amount of rates under the shilling rate struck last year would be payable to the county as rates on Crown and native lands, and how soon they would be paid. The estimate appears in another column. The committee adjourned at 4 p.m.
