HAWERA GAS COMPANY.
A meeting of provisional directors in the above company was held at the Borough Chambers last night. Present — Messrs. Cobham, Duffill, King, Parrington, Thomson, and Wanklyn (secretary). Mr. Thomson was voted to the chair.
The Chairman said that the directors had received full information about the electric light, and, after discussion, had resolved that it was not suitable for Hawera.
A deputation from the company then waited on the Mercantile Union, and stated the position of the company. The deputation said that money was scarce and times hard, and that it would be a great drain on the community if the necessary capital had at once to be drawn from the pockets of burgesses. The deputation suggested that the Council {should take in hand the raising of the
money at a low rate of interest, and the burgesses would^then only have to pay the actual cost of the gas consumed. The Union appeared inclined to take a favorable view of the matter, as they were citizens and •would be consumers of the gas. The impression conveyed was that they would submit the matter to the favorable consideration of the Council, and if that body then decided to take any action in the matter, the proposal would have to be submitted to a poll of the burgesses, for them to say whether they would agree to the possibility of a rate in connection with the scheme. After thanking the Union the deputation withdrew, and the meeting then adjourned.
