HAWERA SPORTS.

A meeting of those interested in arrange ing for sports at Hawera on New Year's Day took place at Cook's Hotel last evening. There were about 30 present, and Mr. Major was voted to the chair. The balance sheet showed that last year the account was opened with a credit balance , of £18 10s lid ; that JB6I 6s was collected in subscriptions ; nominations, £10 13s ; the booths brought £15 14s ; the gate and acceptances, £22 ss ; which with a few other small items brought up the total to £131 8s lid. Of this, £78 5s went for prizes, and after all accounts for advertising and incidental expenses had been met there was a balance to credit to commence this year with of £25 0s 3d. The balance sheet was adopted and a general opinion expressed that it was very satisfactory. .

On tho motion of Mr. F. Baddeley, Be conded by Mr. \V. Adamson, it was re solved that the sports be carried out as tost year, the proposal that the volunteers take it up thus being negatived. Mr. S. Adamson moved, and Mr. 7\. Douglas seconded, that a committee be formed, and that they have power to arrange with cricketers re ground. Mr. Meredith moved, and Mr. Duffill seconded, as an amendment, that a co nmittee be formed to carry on the sports to be held on the cricket ground, and in the event of tl-ere be'ng a surplus, the committee be empowered to make a donation to the cricket club.

The question at issue was the right of the cricketers to the exclusive use of the cricket ground. On the one side it was urged that as they had gone to so much expense their right should be recognised ; on the other hand, it was claimed that the ground belonged to the people, and that while there was every disposition to give a subscription to the cricket club it should be forced from the committee as a matter of right. Ultimately the amendment was carried.

On the motion of Mr. S. Adamson, seconded by Mr. Meredith, it waß resolved that the following be a committee with power to add to their number :—: — Messrs. Major, W. Adantson, Suiter, Purdey, McLdowie, and Buchanan. Mr. Meredith moved, and Mr. Jury seconded, That the appointment of starter and judge be left to the committee. — Agreed to. It was resolved to appoint as handicapper6—Messrs. J. Hood, McLdowie, and \V. Adamson.

A subscription list was opened, and £8 18s. collected.

The meeting was very hearty, and no doubt there will be good sports.
