CRICKET.

The Hawera cricketers have at last turned the tide of defeat, and yesterday they pulled off the match with the Combined A.C.'s, at Manaia, by five wickets. F. Bayly bowled well, as he always does, and G. Bayly displayed excellent form ; and so it happened that the A.C. wickets fell fast and runs came slowly, especially iv the second innings, when G. Bayly was very difficult to play. On the first innings, the A.C. had decidedly the best of it ; but in their second innings, a very poor show was made ; and with 51 runs to make, the Hawera team commenced their second attempt. Ham was bowling splendidly, and Riddiford, Holland, Ranson, and F. Bayly were soon got rid of for less than a dozen of the required number. However, just at this point five leg-byes were run off the bowlers, and the A.C. captain committed the error of taking the bowlers off instead of strengthening the field behind the wicket. Good and Mathieson went on to bowl, and Fowler and Wanklyn punished them at once and pretty severely, nearly scoring all the runs required to win. In fact the tie had been reached when the latter was bowled. Fowler and G. Bayly were the not out men. The fielding was first rate on the whole. The A.C.s were remarkably good. On Hawera side, however, the skipper, who is usually a very safe catch, missed two chances, while on the other hand Ranson distinguished himself greatly at point. There was a large attendance, and the day was very pleasant and jolly. Following are the scores : — Combined A.C. Ist innings. Goring, bG. Bayly , ...' 1 Thompson, run out 5 Wyatt, b F.
