(per united press association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. G Quite a sensation was caused in town last evening when it was ascertained that ° a well-known Government officinl had r< attempted suicide under somewhat peculiar circumstances. It appears that Mr. W. M. Lewis, assistant Crown law officer, was to have been married in the afternoon to a young lady (Miss Dyer) ; but at the appointed time for' the ceremony to take place he failed to put in an appearance, and, after waiting some time, the as- ai semblage were informed that Mr. Lewis sc had been taken seriously ill and could ol not attend. It is generally understood p< that Mr. Lewis made an attempt on his h life by cutting his throat, but no definite cl information has reached town as to his w condition, although the wounds are not b< believed to be of a serious nature.
