PATEA, This Day. i The Wakatu, from Wellington, met * with a serious mishap entering the river this morning, and is now alongside the wharf with her hold nearly full of -water. She was signalled at nine o'clock to take ; the bar, on which there were twelve feet of water. There was a stiff breeze blowing L and a moderate sea on. The engines ' were stopped in a minute, to prevent her breaking the blades of her propeller, and by means of a staysail she sailed off in [ twenty minutes. The engines were started i full speed, and she was beached on the sand near the wharf in eight feet of water, i The extent of damage cannot be ascer1 tamed until low tide, but it is thought she can be repaired here in a few days. ■ The cargo now discharging is consider- , ably damaged, also the mails. According i to the company's rales, consignees will bear average on loss. The vessel is insured for .£4OOO in the South British : office. Previously, in avoiding the end ' of the breakwater, she was twice stranded. She lias a large general cargo and a number of passengers. Later. Passengers — Messrs. The following are the consignees : — 14 pkgs, Owen ; 2 bales, Bate ; 8 pkgs Gower ; 4 bales, Nolan ; 1 pkg, Public Works ; 3 cases, King ; 1 do, Osterling ; 2 do, Prichard ; 62 pkgs, Bennett and Eobbins; 17 do, Eoskruge; 6 do, Pulford; 3 do, Quin ; also, Nodder, Boyd, Adamsou, Cobham, Meuli, Kirk, Read, O'Neill and Wilson, Davis and Co., Davidson, Noble, Cross, Duffill, Syme, A'Court, Leslie, Scott and Baker.
