NORMANBY.
(?ItOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Taking advantage of the fine weather, the Town Board have determined to start at once on the streets of the town, . and tenders have been accepted for the breaking up of the ruetal necessary for' the work. Specifications are in preparation, and tenders will shortly be culled for improving Stratford-street from the Railway beyond Wilson's botel to tbe stock saleyards. The trees standing in the middle of the road will be cut down, roots grubbed, aud tbe road formed and metalled, The old inetal.aloug Stratford-street will be picked up, and the large round stones which from their Want cf binding qualities have caused the numerous holes at present to be observed will be broken. A .strata of coarse broken metal will tben be laid down, which again .will be covered with gravel of fine quality',. Tbe footpaths will at the same time be made and tbe water tables cleared and levelled in such a manner as will ensure efficient drainage. It is satisfactory to see tbe Board commencing thus early, instead of as is too often the case with local bodieß, leaving the initiation of improvements until summer is fairly upon us .and the com- 1 pietion of the same for winter rains to impede, . The township lifts beon enlivened a little during the past week by the passage through of intending purchasers at the forthcoming land sale ; and umcb, interest has also been shown in tjievery extensive farming operations of Mr. J. S. Caverlnll in our immediate vicinity. Few; amongst us have ever witnessed so many machines of latest invention at work at the same time, and the beauty, of tbe teams were the admiration of all. The work done will bear the strictest scrutiny, and the personal superintendence of the gentleman mentioned doubtless added. greatly to., the success of the systematic tillage be has 1 initiated in the vicinity.
Tho usual quarterly licensing meeting was held at Manaia on Friday. Mr. A, Hastie in the chair. Messrs. Ikoadbeut. uud Hughes were uluo present. A trans-, t'et wus granted fi'oiu Mr. -Thomas Lloyd to Mr. Lewis. And Mr. J. Jackson was ordered to'erect an onttjide etftircaee.
