CONCERT AT MANAIA.

Tho concert in aid of the Manaia Volunteer Hall was held on Friday evening. The night was dark and stormy, And rain fell at intervals durjng the performance, 'Which interfered greatly with the success of some of the songs. TTtiHl sucb time as the building is lined and ceiled its acoustic properties "will lie very indifferent. The Bound i 8 lost ftmpug the rafters and beams, and good music is heard at a great disadvantage. We do not propose to criticise the performance in detail, because . the amateurs played, sang, and recited under such adverse circumstances that they were quite unable to do full justice to the parts undertaken by each. The overture played by Mr. J. Sutherland left nothing to be desired. His execution is exceptionally good, touch crisp, and time perfect. The instrument, though of fair quality, was not powerful enough for so large a building. " The Skipper and his Boy" was well- sung by a popular auctioneer. " The Shamrock " was rendered by a,ge,ntlenian whose voice is good, but who seems a little lacking in confidence when facing an audience. An excellent recitation, entitled the " Spirit of Contradiction," was given in first-class style by Mr. Gco. McLean. The "Pas litklouble," by a lady pianiste, and II Corricolo galop, as a duet, in which the same lady took part, deserve special mention. •' Keep your powder dry " was well sung by a gentleman,' who was called upon for an encore. About 100 persons were present, and' it was expected that the proceeds of the entertainment would be fully £10.
