TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR.

Sib, — Many other burgesses as well as the writer were glad to see that, by your last report of the Borough Council, the councillors seemed to get through a lot of business of a practical nature. Resolutions were pushed through, and there was no bickering between the chairman and councillors : no exchange of compliments, as you used to put it. I gave the council a touch up last week, but I hope they won't go too far and want to do too much. They must be careful not to throw the rates of the borough away. That fascine work I agree with, and also the parade of tho drays and expresses ; and I am glad to see that they have called for tenders for stone breaking, and to put the roads into something like repair before the next land sale. I strongly object to wire bands for the fascines, they would be very dangerous. —I am, &c., Ratepayer.

The report of the Welcome Mine at Beefton gives the following interesting particulars: — "The quantity of stone crushed during the past six months was 2160 tons, and the gold obtained 6581 ozs 18 dwts, showing an average of over 3 ozs to the ton. During the same period there was paid in dividends £19,875, equal to 26s 6d per share. The receipts from gold account, f om registration, to 26th June last, were £181,255 12s 7d; and the amount expended in dividends, in the same period, was £75,875. There is every prospect of this unexampled prosperity being of long continuation.
