HEAVY FLOODS.

[united peess association.} NAPIER, This Day. Heavy rains during the last few days have caused the most serious floods experienced for years. The whole country round about Napier is under water. The residents in Clive and Meanee districts had to be removed in boats. All the rivers are overflowing their banks and suspending wheel traffic ; and notice is given of the suspension of railway traffic should rain continue. The embankment near Waitangi is being washed away. The schooners Frank Guy, Mary Wadley, and Silver Cloud, lying in the roadstead, had to slip their anchors and beat out. They appear to have got well out to sea. A heavy surf is now breaking on the beach. There are, however, no signs of the stoppage of rain, though the wind keeps high. No loss of life is reported, and losses of stock are believed to be small, the settlers having anticipated floods and driven their animals to higher ground. GISBORNE, This Day. A continuous downpour of rain 6ince Sunday last, has culminated in the severest flood which has occurred here for some years past. The Waipawa river overflowed its banks near Tutoko, inundating all the county between thero and Eoseland. The effects of the flood at Ormond have boon severe. Bloomfield, Wyllio and Melville Smith succeeded in driving their 6tock to higher ground. The Orau bridge has according to latest information been washed away. This bridge was erected about three years ago, at a cost of 4>2,500. Timely precaution precaution taken by settlers in sending stock away, has prevented a much larger amount of damage than otherwise would have occurred. The rain is still decemling, without any indication of abating.
