(per united press association.) PATEA, This Day. The voting for the £5000 loan for the improvement of the borough has resulted iv its being disapproved of. 101 voted for it and 73 against. The number required to sanction itwaß 104 ; it was thus lost by three votes. NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. The gallows to hang Hiroki on is being erected in the gaol. Application has been made to the gaoler for a copy of Hiroki's coufession, but it was refused by order of the Government. Hiroki will he hung to-morrow morning. | AUCKLAND, This Day. The damage done to the City Market by the recent fire was assessed at £620. A largo number of mountain quail and priario hens have been stolen from tho acclimatisation gardens, Auckland. Tho Telephone Exchange has eightytwo subscribers. DUNEDIN, This Day. Through a landship in a cntting near Shag Point, a mixed train from Oamaru to Palmorston South ran off the iine. The engine and six wagons went off ; but nobody was hurt. ASHBUETON, June 5. The Wakanui eloction is creating considerable interest. Mr. Ivess has been addressing largo meetings throughout the district, and has received unanimous votes of confidence in almost every place. The nomination takes place on Saturday. TIMARU, June 5. At tho licensing meeting of the borough of Timaru to-day, all applications for tho renewal of lioenses were granted. With one exception, tho hours were extended till midnight. TAURANGA, June 5. The largest meeting ever held here came off on Saturday evening, when it was decidod to form a company to construct a railway from Tauranga to Rotorua, via Takate. Capital £250,000, in £1 shares, 50,000 being for tho promoters. Five thousand shares have been already taken up. A resolution was carried calling on Captain Morris to ask the Government to bring in a Bill to enable the company to start, or, failing their doing so, to bring in a Bill himself. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, a youth named Bathurst Nool was charged with having assaulted and presented a revolver at a man named Dawkins, at the Exhibition. Tho evidence showed that a dispute arose as to the price lof some articles on Dawkin's stall. The latter called Nool a liar, at the same time ordering him away. Noel refused to go, when Dawkins knocked him down, and then Noel presented a revolver at him, but was prevented from using it. Noel, in defence, pleaded the grievous provocation received, and said that having latoly been severely bitten by a dog, he had since carried a revolver to protect himself. Tho statement about tho dog was shown to bo correct; and tho Bench, remarking that Dawkins had beon the aggressor, dismissod the case, but confiscated the revolver.
