Active proceedings are about to be taken by the Property Tax Department against all who neglected to reply to the circulars recently issued, requiring returns under the Acts of last session. Some 4000 circulars were issued, and only about 1500 replies have been received.

The following Volunteer appointments are gazetted : — Stratford Bangers, James Hirst to be Sub-lieutenant. Ngaire Rifles, John Cunningham to be Lieutenant ; and Francis Bernard Selwood Tresillan McCarthy to be Sub-lieutenant. The Penguin is ashore at the French Pass. The Wallace is standing by her, and the position is not considered dangerous. 1 NELSON, This Day. The Hawea arrived at the French Pass this morning at 2 o'clock, and found the Penguin jammed in one of the wash ways in the breaks in the reef. She lies about two of her own lengths from the beacon at Pass Point. At her bows there are 17 feet water, and 18 feet aft, at low water. She is straight through the reef, and is fixed by rocks on both sides, about abreast of the mainmast. The tide runs both ebb and flow, straight with her. Part of her propeller ' was 3 feet high at high water. She has laid one tide, and has nob sbramecl. At 5.40, when the Hawea left, she had made no water. It is expected to get her off when the tide next makes.
