j (from a correspondent). ' A large meeting was held at the Telegraph Hotel this evening, Mr. W. Middleton in the chair, when the following resolutions were passed : — Proposed by Mr. Peacock, seconded by Mr. Jones, and carried unanimously, "That the chairman. of this meeting be asked to communicate with the Defence Minister, laying before him the desire of the settlers of Opunake to have the Opunake Rifle Volunteers placed on pay, thereby enabling the said volunteers to fortify their settlement and provide against any attack that may at any time be made, the present camp not being so situated as to afford them any protection, in the case of a night attack j and further, the desirability of this being done immediately, to prevent certain unemployed members of the volunteers being compelled to leave the district in search of employment." It was also proposed by Mr. Stott, seconded by Mr. Tucker, and unanimously carried, " That the chairman of this meeting communicate with Major Atkinson immediately by telegraph, asking this quesfcioo—Why the Opunako Rifle Volunteers are not conceded the same privilege as other corps now on pay in this district, considering that the said volunteers have suffered considerably through the suspension of work, awaiting result of the present crisis, and that as electors and settlers the people of Opunake claim as a- right the privilege sought for. • Nov. 1.
