According to Te Whiti, Titokowaru, as the son of " Benjamin, who, in the morning, eat of the prey, and in the evening divided the spoil," is the appointed scourge of the tribes. He now rests quietly at Okaiawa, therefore, why this agitation ? OPUNAKE, Last Night. The Premier, Major Atkinson, the Native Minister, Colonel Roberts, Major Stapp, and Mr. Parris have arrived here ; their future movements are not yet known. There is no native news. NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. A little girl, five years' old, named Maria Bason, was drowned at Urenui yesterday. The child was found in a pig hole full of water, in Rowe's brickfield. The child was staying with her sister, her parents being in Wanganui.
(per united press association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. The following Registrars of Electors of Electoral Districts have been appointed : — Alfred Ross, Rangitikei, Manawatu, and Foxton ; Garland William Woon, Waitotara and Wanganui ; Wilfred Rennell, New Plymouth and Taranaki , Alfred Trimble, Egmont. The Customs revenue for the month has been £20,890. Thomas Dwan will contest one of the Wellington seats. No fresh news hae heen received hy ibe Government from the West Coasfc. Property in Willis street changed hands, the price being at the rate of £'75 per foot. OTAKI, Last Night. An influential native chief, named Matene te Whiwhi, died at his residence here last night, aged 76. He was chief of the Ngatitoa tribe, and was in receipt annually of a pension of £100 from Government.

It is stated on good authority that Major Pitt will not seek re-election at the forthcoming general election.
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night.
The Press states, this morning, that the Hon. J. Hall will not seek re-election for Leeston, but will offer 'himself for the representation of the Selwyn district. Mr. Maxwell had an interview with the Railway men on strike this morning ; after hearing the statements of the men, Mr. Maxwell informed them he was sorry lie could not recommend the Government
to make any alterations in the scale of wages.
DUNEDIN, L.ist Night. The New Zealautl refrigerating Company expect to have tLeir works ready by February or March. The machinery is coming from. London by the Hurunui.
AUCKLAND, Last Night. In response to Major Withers' advertisement, about seventy men mustered at the Drill-shed to-day. Twelve were selected ; and Major Withers telegraphed to Wellington for further instructions.
