WELLINGTON, Last Night.

At a public meeting, held here last night, the Representation Bill was condemned. It was resolved to forward copies of the resolutions to the Legislative Council, and to members representing the district. The Government have received advices from the Royal Astronmical Society in London, stating that three scientific gentlemen would arrive m Auckland the first week in September, so as to consult with local observers as to the transit of Venus, which takes place in 1882.

The steamer Wakatipu arrived from Sydney this morning, and proceeded to the Quarantine Station. She will be admitted to pratique to-morrow. One hundred pounds has been subscribed by the Jews in this city, for their persecuted co -religionists in South Russia. NAPIER, Last Night.

It is reported that Beadle, the Post Office Clerk, tried to hang himself on Sunday night. A skeleton has been found in the Okawa Ranges. It is supposed by some that the remains are those of a woman, who was employed at Beamish's station, but left a few weeks ago, for the purpose of going to Sydney.

AUCKLAND, Last Night.

At the meeting of the Harbor Board, the Works Committee recommended that tenders should be called for section 1 of the preliminary reclamation work in connection with the construction of the new dock, Calliope Point. The recommendation was agreed to, Mr. McKenzie being the only dissentient. Mr. W. F. Bnckland announces that he will contest Franklyn, and Garrard, the labor agitator, announces that he will contest the , City West, at the general eleection.

Judge Gillies states that be has satisfied himself that beet-root could not be grown as a sugar producer in New Zealand. He is cultivating sorghum, which can be profitably grown for the production of sugar.
