At Court to-day, -Abraham Moses, and Lewis Moses, were charged with arson, by setting fire to their premises. A gum-digger named William Larlrin, formerly of the 70th Regiment, fell into a fire, during an epileptic fit at Wade 1 , and determined to terminate. his sufferings by drowning himself, but ''was prevented by a settler named Hardy. At a meeting of the Local Board of Health, a resolution was passed, condemning the new quarantine regulations, and urging the Government to resort to . cbe previous stringent regulations, as the introduction of small-pox was simply a question of time. It is stated that the Maori king visits Auckland and the Northern settlements in three -weeks' time. Dr. Philson, Health Officer, has written to the Board of Health, declaring that the new regulations re vessels from Sydney provide no protection whatever against the introduction of small-pox. GISBORNE, August 25. Visitors to the Southern Cross ground have returned, and report unlimited a quantities of parraffin. At a general* meeting of the Pacific Company, letting parts of the ground on tribute was negatived. The committee) of advice elected were — Messrs. Tucker, Stubbs, Smith, McLean and Cooper.
