CIVIL SERVICE REDUCTIONS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR.
Sir, — About sixteen months has elapsed since a reduction of 10 per cent, was levied on the salaries of all Civil Servants. Strange to say, the people of the North Island are reduced 12 per cent., instead of 10 per cent., while our neighbors across the Straits simply pay the percentage which the law calls for. For instance, Civil Servants in the South Island receive 6s. 2d. per day, while in this Island we receive 6s. per day. It seem rather curious that we Bhould be taxed 2d. per day more than the people of the South Island. Why should we do more for the support of the country than the people in other provinces, and, in fact, the people who have reaped the benefit of the Local Loans which are now the burden of the country. People may think, or make the remark, that 2d. a day is a trifling amount to growl about, but is it not much more trifling on the part of the Government to take advantage of the depression in financial affairs to pile on the agony 2 per cent, heavier? Ido not approve of strikes ; neither do I approve of the Government striking off 2d. per day off our already small wages. —I am.- r -&o., - — - —
Clvil Servant.
