INTERPROVINCIAL NEWS.

WELLINGTON, Last Night. Mr. Whitelaw, late Superintendent of the Mount View Lunatic Asylum, has obtained bail, and has been liberated.
It is understood that the Government have not yet decided on their course of action in regard to the Inspector of Lunatic Asylums. Dr. Skae's full report, in reply to the Royal Commission on the Mount View Asylum, has been at length received, but there has not yet been time for the Cabinet to take it into full consideration. The matter will come before the Cabinet at an early date, when a definite decision will be arrived at.
AUCKLAND, Last Night.
The barque Fern, which arrived from London, reports a vessel, either brig or brigantine, ashore on the Little Barrier. The sails were loose, and foretopmast gone. Apparently the vessel was abandoned. She is supposed to be the Policeman, Oaptain Champion, from Norfolk Island and Noumea. A schooner was observed making for her. The census returns show an extraordinary increase. In Auckland City and suburbs the population within the borough limits, which only includes 640 acres, is 17,730, or an increase of 3972 in three years. The population of the suburbs surrounding bring up the total population of the city and suburbs to 38,735, an increase of 9377 since last census. The population of the Provincial District is roughly estimated at 95,000, or an increase *of 12,330 since 1878.
The police at last have been instructed to enforce the provisions of the Employment of Females Act.
To-day the City Council clerk was made a Mormon. He resigned his appointment, and goes to Utah. Thomas Simms, concerned in the Kiverheiul attempted murder, was remanded. The girl, Anuie Carline, is not yet sufficiently recovered.
The brigantine Annie Bow, from Timaru, reports that she could see nothing of the wreck at the Little Barrier. Tho White Helena, from Oamaru, imports this morning that the vessel was apparently ashore on the N.E. corner of the island. Tho boat leaves to-night, with Captain Clayton, to investigate.

George Rhodes, carpenter, fell on the asphalto pavemeut. He broke his leg, ami died in the hospital.
BeedelPs brewery, on the North road, wi\9 destroyed by fire this morning. It was burnt down once before — about two yours ago. Tho insurances on the buildiug are :— .£looo in the National ; in the Standard, on contents ; and £600 in tile New Zealand. No due has been obtained ns to the origin of the fire. TAURANGA, Last Night. Tho charge against Edward William BorfioKl, for attempting to rob the National Bank, is proceeding. DUNEDIN, Last Night. There is nothing new to report about the Tararua wreck.
T. Garrett, who was injured in the lioslyn tramway accident, died last night.
