The inquest on the body of Bopoama Peni Peni, who was killed in the fight with Bawiri, commenced yesterday. The evidence proved that the parties had had frequent quarrels. A half-caste deposed that on Saturday night Bawiri and Eopoama were fighting outside the latter's house. Bawiri struck Bopoama, and knocked him down ; he 6truck him again in his side when getting up, and when Bopoama was going to his house, Bawiri hit him in the back. Could not see whether Eopoama was hut. Witness went away for a few minutes, and came back when he saw Bopoama coming up to his wife. Bawiri got up and again struck him. This was in the orchard. When Bawiri struck Bopoama, the latter fell with his head against a stump. He did not get up again. Witness was close by them when Nitana came and lifted the deceased's head up on her lap. He did not see Bopoama attempt to strike a blow. He did not know the cause of the quarrel on Saturday. Deceased and the prisoner appeared to be on friendly terms, but they had been drinking. The inquest was resumed to-day. Dr. Scott's evidence proved that the cause of death was compression of the brain, caused by a blow on the right temple. A half-caste lad named Grace stated that during the quarrel Bopoama's wife threatened to kill deceased (her husband). He also mentioned that the quarrel with Eawiri arose over a pipe. It is thought probable that the inquest will extend over to-morrow.
