ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT.

Ernest C. Wilkinson, Receiver of Land Revenue, and Clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Court, Hawera, was brought befoze Captain Wilson, J.P., on Saturday morning, on a charge of having feloniously embezzled the sum of £16 3s. Od. Mr. Barleyman — I appear, your Worship, on behalf of the Comptroller and Auditor-General.

Mr. Ward — I appear, your Worship, on behalf of the accused.

Mr. Barleyman — This case, your Worship, is one involving a considerable amount of money, although the information only states £16 3s. Od. There will be a considerable number of witnesses to be examined, and therefore I have to ask that the case should be remanded for a few days. The Bench — To what date do you wish the case adjourned ? Mr. Barleyman — I think Thursday, the 24th instant, will do.

Mr. Ward — On behalf of the accused, I have no objection to the remand ; but I would ask your Worship to extend the bail, as it is quite possible that it can be got. Unfortunately, the persons who were likely to go bail were out of town when the charge was preferred against the accused.

The Bench — There is no objection to extending the bail. The case will be remanded till Thursday, the 24th instant ; the accused to find bail, himself in £1000, and two sureties of £500 each.

. Mr. Ward — I presume there will be no necessity for sending the accused to New Plymouth, as the time is so short ?

The Bench — I am not aware what the Police Regulations are, but the lock-up here is hardly a suitable place to keep a person in for any length of time. The accused then left the dock in the Custody of the police.
