CRICKET.

AUSTRALIANS V. WANGANUI.

(from our special correspondent.)

Wanganui, Last Night. The cricket match, Australians versus Twenty-two of Wanganui, commenced at half-past eleven this morning. Australians played one short, Blackham unfortunately being laid up with a bad foot. His place was, however, ably filled by Jarvis, who kept the wickets in splendid style. Cross winning the toss, decided on taking the field. Groube and Spofforth represented Australia at the wickets. The ground was in a disgraceful state ; consequently no heavy scoring was made. Their innings closed for 49, Spofforth, with 10, being the highest scorer. Murdoch was caught at short leg for 4. Parrington and F. Ba3'ly bowled in splendid form, the former tailing five wickets for twenty-eight runs, and the latter three for eleven. Jacomb kept wickets in capital style. Wanganui's first innings closed for 48, one behind their opponents, Beresford and Parrington with 14 and 6 respectively being top scorers, the former showing a splendid defence against Spofforth and Palmer, who bowled throughout the innings. Of the Twenty-two, twelve retired with the dreaded duck's egg. In Australia's second innings, two wickets are down for 18 runs — Palmer 12, Boyle 0, and Spofforth, 6, not out. About 1500 spectators were on the ground. The weather was splendid. The match will bs resumed at 11 o'clock to-morrow. Of the 48 scored by Wanganui, the Hawera contributed 28.
