Carltcle, Last night. On Tuesday evening far. C. C. Howard, principal of the Normal School, Wellington, gave a selection of readings in the Town Hall. The audience was small, but highly appreciative. Mr. Howard was most successful in his rendering of "Richard Doubledick," and Tennyson's poem "Dorah." His reading occupied two hours, which slipped by most agreeably. A public meeting was held on Tuesday evening in the Council Chamber, to consider the question of fixing the name of the town as Patea, and doing entirely away with the name Carlyle. Mr. Dale occupied the chair. It was resolved to request Government to carry the change into effect.

A cricket match will be played here on Saturday against a scratch eleven from Eakaramea. The scratch eleven consist

of F. Read, L. Read, G. Pearce, W. Pearce, Baggett, Wills, Byrne, Mcßae, Turner, Petch, and J. Heaphy. A pretty strong eleven will play against them.

Wanganui is to have a visit from the Australian cricketers, and will select a 22 to oppose them from Wanganui to New Plymouth. Patea and Hawera clubs are likely to send several representatives.

A special meeting of the Harbor Board was held on Monday to receive tenders for the erection of a new warehouse at the wharf. Mr. E. Hottbam's tender, £277 11s, was accepted. The others were — Mace and Basset, £294 ; T. Haywood, sen., £326 ; Gerrie and Harris, £344 9s. Mr. F. W. Storey was appointed inspector of the work, at a fee of £5 ss.
