Sydney, Yesterday.

The first sitting of the Intercolonial Conference, which was adjourned from Melbourne, was held yesterday. Representatives from all the colonies, with the exception ol New Zealand, were present. The business transacted was purely of a preliminary character, the programme of the proceedings of the Conference being alone dealt with.

Skorthorpe has telegraphed that he has in his possession the telescope which was presented by the Governor, on behalf of the colouists of New South Wales, to Leichardt, the ill-fated explorer. The business premises of Mr. Bechet, an American importer, in Barrack street, were totally destroyed by fire. All efforts to subdue the flames were fruitless. Mr. Bechet ordinarily slept on the premises, and, as he cannot now be heard of, in is feared he perished in the fire.
