PUBLIC MEETING AT NEW PLYMOUTH.
[Specially. Telegraphed to Stab. )
(feom our own correspondent.)
New Plymouth, Last night.
A public meeting was held last night, convened by the Mayor, when the following resolutions were passed: — 1. This meeting is surprised to learn that it is not the intention of the Government to hold a sale of Parihaka land within the Taranaki county. The whole of the P&ribak& block is situate within that county, and is only twenty miles from New Plymouth, and is connected by a good road, while the nearest part of the block is fully forty miles from Hawera. The people of this district accepted the decision of the Government and fcbe Waste Tu&nds Board, in holding sales of land situate within the Patea county at the most convenient place in that county as fair and reasonable under the altered political division of the colony from provinces to counties.
2. This meeting believes that the sale of land at New Plymouth will have greater political significance than if held elsewhere, and to intending purchasers, the land is more easily inspected from the New Plymouth side. 3. This meeting therefore respectfully requests the Government to re-consider the matter, and not inflict on the district such a manifest injustice and inconvenience as fixing the place of sale of lands in our immediate vicinity at a place so remote as Hawera. The Mayor was direoted to send the same to the Government.
