Carlyle, Last night. Mr. John Blackett, Engineer-in-Chief, is here on a visit, accompanied hy Mr Knox. Yesterday he inspected the railway works, and was interviewed by the resident engineer and the Chairman of the Harbour Board.
The Jane Anderson will be lannched into the river to-morrow if the weather continue settled.
Entries are coming in steadily for the Caledonian sports to be held here on New Year's day. The privileges were auctioned yesterday by Mr William Cowern, the gate fetching £25 ; liquor booth, _S10; refreshment stall, £1 11s. At the same time Mr Cowera also Bold the right to collect the dog tax, as iollows : — J. Chadwick, Ofcoria Biding, _877 10s.; C. E. Brewer, Waverley Biding, £50 ; B. Jaeornb, Hawera Biding, £100. A number of Maoris assembled here yesterday to receive the balance of the purchase money of the Kaitangiwhenua land. It was necessary that the seven chiefs interested should each be present, and sign the deed in the presence of Mr Gill ; one, however, was absent, and while he is being fetched, the payment is delayed. At the B.M. Court on Tuesday, before Dr Croft and H. R Christie, Es^., J.P.s, Heotor Payne was fined 6s. and costs for furious riding. Francis Drake was fined ( £1 and costs for using language calculated to create a breach of the peace. In a civil case, Howitt v. Houguez, judgment was given against defendant-for amount , claimed, £<&, for rent, uni cosh.
