(frROM OUR OWN CORBESPONDENT.) Carlyle, Friday. Mr. Foulis, inspector of schools for this district, has concluded an examination' of the pupils attending Mr. Dyer's school ;. and has proceeded northwards. The result of his inspection will shortly be made known. Numerous visitors attended to see the pupils examined. Captain Evans, of the s.s. Wakatu, brought his steamer into harbor f on Wed : , nesday. He reports a great improvement on the bar, caused by the recent fresh carrying off a portion of the north spit, and thereby straightening the channel. i
Mr. T. North has commenced the erection of a large building, to be used as a drapery store, next to the Bank, of New South Wales.
The Patea Rifle Corps have challenged a team of the Wellington City Guards to fire a mateh — twelve men a.gide — and the event is likely to take place shortly. A most successful dramatic entertainment was given last evening in the Town Hall by members of the Patea Garrick Club. The hall was crowded in every part, and the financial result must be very gratifying to the society. An orchestral band of eight performers played selections as interludes. The proceeds will be applied to a wardrobe fund. .
