DEFERRED PAYMENT LAND.

One hundred and five applications^wers received ' ab the District Land OBices., Hawera and Carlyle;:on Monday, for the sections thrown open for . selection on deferred, payment. Eighty-three applications . were received at Hawera, and twenty-two at Carfyle. Four sections were uncontesfced, viz.:— Section 5, block 1, which 'becomes the property of James Crawford, farmer, Waitotara; section 6, block 1, James Wilson, platelayer, Waverley; section 6, block 5, John William Barnes, laborer, Blenheim ; and : section 44, block 6, John Bentley, settler, ; Wellington. No. 1 section, block 5, waa the only one , for -which there were no > Af>pli*Jmfcs. I» the BVeV&pg r tfonsiderahl^ ! interest was evinced as to [the nuihber ol applications received, and a .large crowd collected outside the District Land Office Ito hear the result. When it was mads known, one old settler .was beard to ex- ; olaim, "By Jove ( this is like a. second Waikato invasion." He -was. understood to refer to the -large number of applicants for land who were supposed to have come from that portion of the country. -Another person exclaimed : "If only required another murder or Vworand there would i have been ten times tbe number of appli- ' oante." It will he seen from hhe partzeai lars given below that the average size oi i the sections exceeds j that of the cash land, thus proving that; the protests uttered by the Star and other journals against cabbage -garden areas I wexe not altogether in vain. The sections will be pat ap to auction at li a.m. to-day, at the Town Hall, Hawera, by the Commissioner of Crown Lands, when it is to be hoped that the applicants will not allow the excitement of the auction-room to prevail over their cooler judgments.
