JUROR'S EXPENSES.
Owing to the extra expense entailed upon the jurors, witnesses, and others who were engaged in investigating the late murder case at Opunake, the coroner (Dr. Gibbes) telegraphed to the Minister of Justice, asking that some additional allowance might be paid to them. The' Government, however, declines to accede to the request, as may be seen from the following telegram received by Dr. Gibbes from the Minister of Justice : — " As to jurors' expenses, the Government has had the matter under consideration, and recognises the great call which has been made upon all concerned in the conduct t>S fcliis ixnporkanb inquiry, hat the .Legislature lias advisedly determined that such an inquest is one of the demands of society upon its individual members, which should be met without monetary consideration being given, and the Government could not go outside the law in the matter. The rule has been adhered to in similar cases where individuals have been called on to make great sacrifices."
