Aj Ji, a Chinaman, attempted to drown himself on Wednesday, but was rescued. The cause was intemp ranee. Chiefs of Hauaura, Ngatimaniapoto, and Te Ngakau were present during the expulsion of the ploughmen from Tole's land at Ngamoko, but did not interfere. The natives now threaten depredations on Maclean's land. Napier, Last night. A hotel at Te Aute was totally destroyed by fire last night. The building was insured for i-300 in the National and £300 in the Union, of which the Standard holds £200 as a re-insurance. Grahamstown, Last night. The mayoralty election resulted as follows: — Wilkinson, proprietor of Thames Advertiser, 326 ; G. N. Brassey, solicito r 250. Colonel Eraser, late R.M., retired from the contest. A voter, named McGregor, whilst returning to his work in the Moanatairi mine, was killed by a ladder falling way. Hokitika, Last night. Mr. Learmonth has been elected mayor of Hokitika. Chbistchurch, Last night. There was a good deal of excitement over the mayoral election, which resulted as follows : — Gapes, 558 ; Ayers, 439. The Lyttelton election resulted as follows :— Allwright, 197 ; Webb, 108. Invercargill, Last night. The mayoral election resulted as follows: — Johnston, 246; Hatch, 115; Kingsland, 110. Dunedin, Last night. For the mayoral election Ross obtained 872 ; Fish, 688. There was an immense crowd at the declaration of the poll. Referring to the Australian cricketers, the Star says : — We are given to understand that as a result of the recent negotiations, Mr. A. Halifax, the representative of the team in this colony, will telegraph on Friday to Mr. Alexander, offering the team a lump sum for a New Zealand tour, and freeing them from all risk and expense in connection therewith. The terms are such as will render them at once acceptable to the eleven, and it may therefore be concluded that the visit of the Australians to New Zealand is settled. Captain John Robertson, the signalmaster at Port Chalmers, was drowned last night. He fell from the gangway of the ship Dunedin into the water. • He was soon picked up, but all efforts to restore him to consciousness were without avail. The Minister of Lands has agreed to the postponement of the sale of sections of defaulting' deferred payment settlers till June to enable them to gather in their crops. A deputation from Port Chalmers waited on the Hon. Mr. Oliver yesterdßy, in reference to the stoppage of the railway workshops, Port Chalmers. Mr. Oh'vej replied that, owing to circumlocution and other causes, the works were at present carried on at a dead loss. Recently some* work was done there for 2£d per lb. for which 4£d had been offered. In another case — the Albion's shaft — s£d only had been charged, when 10£ d had been paid in Melbourne for the same description of work. Government ought at once to seriously consider advisability of leasing workshops. Mr. Macandrew, who was present, agreed with Mr. Oliver's suggestion.
