[Specially Telegraphed to Stab. |

(FEOM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

New Pi/xjmouth, .-Last night. A numerously attended public meeting was held last night to consider the unsatisfactory working of the Railway Department. The Mayor was in the chair. A resolution was passed, authorising the Mayor to put himself in communication with the Minister of Public Works, showing the necessity for at once supplying the New Plymouth railway with horse boxes, sheep trucks, timber trollies, and open goods trucks. Th&t locomotive engines of greater power be immediately supplied, not less than two being required. That with the present engines, breakdowns were continuous, and passengers were not secure of reaching their journey's end, and their lives were endangered.

That the opening of the section of railway from Ngaire to Mangawhero immediately on the completion of Mr. Bassett's contract was absolutely necessary for the convenience of the public.

Mr. Kelly, M.H.K., came in late to the meeting. He said he had made arrangements to be in town by 8 o'clodk' He went to the station at 7.30, when the train was due, and waited an hour there. Had he walked, he would have been in town an hoar before the train.

A Committee was appointed ho carry out the resolutions, and if the Government did not attend to them, to call another meeting.

There is nothing fresh here respecting the murder
