On Saturday last the vace-course privileges for Friday's meeting at Patea were sold by auction by Mr. William Cowern, at t the following prices :— 'Gate, £il ; booth, £14; do, .£l4; refreshment do, £1 15s ; do, £1 5s ; cards, £2 10s ; saddling paddock, £2 15s ; games, M. It is rumored that the Patea Boiling Down Company have disposed of their building and plant to Mr. Hbbbs, who for sortie tune past has been residing here. The price has not.transpired. ■ At the B.M. Court yesterday, before C. A. Wray, E.M., Dr. Croft, and H. F. Christie, Esq., J.P.s, a pile-driver named Turley, in the employ of Messrs. Downes and Procter, was charged with having hamstrung a mare, the property of Mr. F. OS. McCarthy, on the morning of Sunday last. The animal was valued at £40 by its -owner. The application of Sergeant Donovan for a remand till Wednesday was granted, the prisoner being released on bail of £2/00 — hizneeli in £100, and two Bareti.es for JSO each. Turley has for three years been in Messrs Downes and Procter's employment, and bears a high character. Sympathy is felt v for him in his paintul position. A charge of the larceny of a cheap set of studs, the property of J. A. Houge, against a young man named Moss, occupied a considerable time. McJss, who has appeared at recent public gatherings as a card-sharper, &c, was defended by Mr. Hamerton. The police failed to prove their charge, and the prisoner was discharged. I On Saturday last a cricket match was played here — Waverley v. Patea. — and
resulted in a win for the Patea Club by one innings and 14 runs to spare. Messrs. Hitching, Heenan, and Dixon scored 28, 10, and 10 respectively for the winning side. Mr. Mason alone of the Waverl y team succeeded in getting into double I figures,. The following are the scores :— i Waverley.
