DEFERRED PAYMENT LAND.

There was a large attendance at the first sale of the Waimate Plains, held on Thursday last, about 300 persons being present. There was keen competition for some of the sections, but many of the applicants evidently considered the Government valuation, or upset price, a fair one, and did not appear disposed to give very much more. The sections ranged from £5 Is. (a shilling over the upset price) to .£lO 2s. 6d. The audience appeared much pleased whenever the sections went low, and the applause was quite as enthusiastic as that bestowed upon some of the efforts of the Choral Society in the evening.

Just as tbe sale was about to commence, Mr. Geo. McLean asked if the land would be subject to the shilling rate for harbor purposes at New Plymouth 1

The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr. Wray) replied that he believed the land was liable to be so rated, although he considered it unlikely that the rate would ever be levied.

Mr. McLean then asked in what position would the settlers stand, in case their houses were burnt down, and their cattle destroyed, by the natives ? Would they be compelled to put up fresh houses ?

Mr. Wray replied that he could not say. No provision was made in the Land Act for such contingencies. Sat if such a thing happened, he thought the settlers would deserve consideration for any injuries which they might suffer from the enemies of the Government. He had, however, received no instructions on the point brought under his notice, and therefore he could give no definite reply. The sale then commenced.
