THE DEFERRED PAYMENT LAND.

The result of the applications for the deferred payment sections has surprised ©veiyoise. The fatt that the system is a bad one, and, practically a 6imple game of chance, is shown by the result. There 'are 'eighty-three applicants for thirty-nine sections ; yet eleven sections were not applied for by anyone, and ten sections had hut one applicant. By an accident, some of the best sections were left out, although it is supposed by some persons that 'selectors were deterred from putting in applications, because they were afraid of a large number of others being rather favorably inclined towards the same sections ; pending the sale, they will pass to Other applicants, and consequently 72 of the original applicants will have to fight for the eighteen sections which remain to be divided among them. There is, so far as we know, no reason why applicants should not be allowed to know how many applications have been lodged for any section which they may wish to acquire. Below will be found the number of applitions received at the Land Offices at Patea and Hawera. We believe that many of the applications were forwarded from here to Patea, because Mr. Wilkinson's appointment as a receiver of land revenue "Was not publicly notified until the last •'Gazette was published, and consequently •'.that gentleman, had to advise selectors to 'forward their deposits and applications 'to Patea.
