Melbourne, Friday.
In the Legislative Council,, on Tuesday night, Mr. Cuthbert moved for a conference of the, two Houses in reference to the payment of members. Mr. Reid, representing th Government, opposed the motion, but it was carried by 18 to 5. The Council are willing to pass the payment to members of Assembly, but not to the Upper House. Mata is being backed for the Melbourne Cup at 10 to 1. The Council has rejected the payment of its own members, but have passed payment to members of the Legislative Assembly. The Totalisator Bill was read a third time in the Assembly.
Sydney, Friday.
The ship Susanna Goddefroi, bound for Yokohama, has been wrecked at Newcastle during a heavy gale, in sight of a number of citizens. All' on board the vessel perished, except Captain Edmondson, late in command of the s.s. Gunga, and four ot the crew. The vessel has completely broken up. Capt. Edmondson has since expired. A preliminary meeting has been called to consider the best means of showing sympathy with the proprietors of the Evening News, in connection with the recent contempt of court case. Cooktown, Friday.
Hopes of a peaceful settlement of the difficulties between Russia and China are improving, but preparations for war continue unabated in China.
