CARLYLE.
(from our own correspondent.)
Carlyle, Friday. On Tuesday last, at^the Resident Magistrate's Court, before Captain "Wray, 8.M., Dr, Croft, H« S. Peacock, J. "W. Keuah, and Major Noake, J.P.s, the hearing of the Whenuakura assault case was resumed, and gone into at some length. The defendant, Hugh McLoughlin, was fined £5 and costs, for assaulting Mr. Weiss. The magistrate said that this being the first case of the nature in the district, he would not impose a sentence of imprisonment without the option of a fine. In the second case, the position of the parties was reversed, McLoughlin charging the schoolmaster with assaulting his child, was dismissed. The cases created considerable interest, and a large crowd attended the trial in the courthouse.
The schooner Amaranth, Capt. Bradley, is now on the way to Patea, from Oamaru, with a full cargo of flour, oats, &c, for a local firm.
The s.s. TVakatu was the object of considerable criticism during her short stay here. She is expected here a^ain from Wellington on Saturday. She has secured the freight of most of the plant for Messrs Webster and McKellar's new flour mji] at Hawera.
